AKCess Pro Server Video Distributed Monitoring Capability
With the advent of increased CCTV monitoring in both public and commercial environments the demands on any system can be immense. How can a single system be trusted to monitor and record video footage simultaneously from multiple cameras situated in multiple locations? What is the maximum possible number of cameras that can be reliably streamed, viewed and recorded simultaneously?
Also important considerations are the hardware requirements and restrictions of an installation and equally the connectivity and bandwidth considerations required for digital compression and storage.
Solution overview using the AKCess Pro Server application
The AKCess Pro Server Software Application has been designed with a high volume capability for multiple cameras at multiple locations with no given limits built in. It is therefore important to know what the potential limits would be. This needs to be balanced with the reality of what an organization would actually want to monitor.
For many organizations it is vital to know that they have a reliable system that has the capability for multi-camera streaming using multi-site servers. This question is frequently asked by organizations who are evaluating CCTV systems. AKCess Pro therefore instigated a test to check the capabilities for the AKCess Pro Server Application.
AKCess Pro Server Video Test Set Up
AKCess Pro created a scenario for multiple cameras at multiple locations that were streaming and recording live video. This type of set up was chosen as it most accurately reflected the extreme monitoring requirements that are likely to be required by any sizable security monitoring system. This form of load testing is essential for any installation that puts a heavy demand on bandwidth and storage requirements.
The AKCess Pro Server Application was installed on a single machine and connected to the LAN. The server application can scan and add any IP camera it finds on the LAN network. On two further machines the AKCess Pro Client’s were installed to simulate user monitoring of live camera feeds and video recording. Each AKCess Pro Client connects to the AKCess Pro Server over the LAN.

AKCess Pro Server
The AKCess Pro Server Application once installed allows the user to scan the LAN network for IP addresses available. The AKCess Pro Server application is a stable reliable and robust application with over ten years of research and development behind it. This makes it the ideal application to base any large CCTV monitoring system on.
As this application can scan and monitor any IP address it can also be used to add and monitor all of AKCess Pro’s environmental monitoring devices, including securityProbe units, giving the additional capability of adding analogue cameras if desired.
For this test a single AKCess Pro Server Application was installed on a machine (PC) with the following specification:
- Microsoft Windows 7 Professional.
- 64-bit, Pentium ® Dual-core CPU E5700 @ 3GHz with 4 GB of RAM.
This installation used approximately 420 MB of RAM with CPU consumption running at about 40%. The network utilization was about 47 Mbps for the ‘Video Server’ process.
AKCess Pro Server Architecture
AKCess Pro recently made some significant changes to their Video Server software architecture. This was done to improve the efficiency of the media transfer between processes over the same machine whilst reducing the processing time/space required.
This improved the video streaming efficiency making the process more stable, reliable and saving valuable memory space at the same time.
AKCess Pro Client
Multiple AKCess Pro Client applications can be installed, each connecting to the AKCess Pro Server over a LAN network. These client workstations can be set up to be used by assigned users to view live video streams or to record and playback selected video footage.
For this test the AKCess Pro Client was then set up on two different machines (PC’s) and each client installation then connected to the AKCess Pro Server over the LAN. 150 live camera feeds were then added to each client giving a total of 300 live camera views.
Generic IP Cameras (Apache Servers)
Ten machines (PC’s with Pentium D E2180, cpu 2.0 GHz, 2GB of Ram) were used (Apache Servers) each with 30 generic IP cameras connected.
This simulates up to 10 different locations either representing different locations within the same building or different buildings in the same city for example. For this test the ten locations were on the same LAN network.
Live Video Streaming
For this test the bandwidth requirements are calculated using the following assumptions:
- A video image with a resolution of 320x240 pixels is digitally encoded (although AKCess Pro can run tests for different resolution sizes on request).
- Every one of the 76,800 pixels is given an 8-bit value for each of the Red, Green and Blue components with 75% quality.
- This results in 40 Kb per image/frame.
- At 4 frames per second the required network bandwidth will be 160 Kbs.

Recording
Using the same AKCess Pro Server installation on the Apache Server with the 300 generic IP cameras connected the recording function was also tested. Four recording policies were created with each policy containing 50 cameras.
All policies were set to record at 4 fps. The machine (PC) running the AKCess Pro Server installation used approximately 160 MB of RAM and the CPU consumption ran at about 2% for the ‘Video Recorder’ process.
Results Summary
- Two AKCess Pro Client installations connected to a single AKCess Pro Server managed to add and display 150 live view cameras each (300 in total in 10 different locations).
- Four recording policies enabled 200 generic IP camera feeds to be recorded for later playback.
The following table illustrates the storage capacity required to store a video image recorded at 4 frames per second.

| 1 Camera | 50 Cameras | 100 Cameras | 200 Cameras | |
| 1 hour | 71 MB | 3.5 GB | 7 GB | 14 GB |
| 12 hours | 84 MB | 42 GB | 84 GB | 168 GB |
| 1 day | 1.7 GB | 83.3 GB | 166.5 GB | 332.9 GB |
| 3 days | 5.1 GB | 249.9 GB | 499.5 GB | 998.7 GB |
| 7 days | 12 GB | 600 GB | 1.17 TB | 2.34 TB |
Remote Monitoring utilizing the Apple iPhone
Once installed the AKCess Pro Server has an additional client that can be installed on an Apple iPhone device. This connects to your server giving you remote access to your workspace.
This makes it easy to monitor video cameras and devices wherever you are in the world and is perfect for remote Access Control applications.
View who and when someone is trying to enter a secure room and check on the environmental aspects like temperature or humidity. You get the same comprehensive access to AKCess Pro devices and cameras but in an easy to use Apple iPhone interface.
The iPhone Interface allows you to connect remotely to the AKCess Pro Server.
