Wireless Tunnel™ NIST2 sensors feature 2x NIST traceable, calibrated temperature sensors in a single stainless steel tube. Working as a pair they check each others values once a second for accuracy. If we deteect the sensors are out of acceptable tolerances an alert is sent warning that the sensor requires re-calibration. NIST4 sensors come with 3x NIST traceable, calibrated temperature sensors in a single stainless steel tube. They work in pairs, with the averages of each pair averaged to give an overall reading. Improved accuracy and calibration checks with failover. Should any pair be out of calibration that value is ignored and an alert generated to warn that a pair is out of calibration.

Glycol Buffer for Medical Refrigerators

When monitoring the temperature inside medical refrigerators, it is industry best practice to place the sensor in a jar of glycol. This acts as a buffer against temperature fluctuations that can occur when the refrigerator door is opened or closed. The important value when monitoring temperature sensitive drugs and vaccines is the actual liquid temperature. Many vaccines should be kept between 2°C and 8°C. They are very sensitive top freezing temperatures and can withstand short periods at elevated temperatures. In order to avoid false alarms or the disposal of drugs and vaccines that may still be viable, the sensor should be placed in a jar of glycol. The liquid glycol will simulate the rate of temperature change seen in the pharmaceutical products. Refrigerators go through cycles of the compressor being on and off to maintain the temperature range inside the refrigerator. When the door is opened warm air will be sucked inside. A standard temperature sensor may register a temperature excursion above 8°Cwhen the door is opened. However, the sensor inside the glycol will not register this change, as the liquid thermal mass will retain the cold temperature during the time the door is opened. In the below graph, you can see the rapid fluctuations of the temperature sensor exposed to air (red line) and the much slower response and stable temperature measured in the glycol.
