Personalize Your Maps: Adding Custom Map Icons in AKCP Quicklime

When your Network Operations Center (NOC) team is staring at a data center floorplan during a critical alert, every second counts. Standardized icons for sensors, cameras, and racks are great, but sometimes your organization has its own established visual language.

If your team is used to a specific symbol for a water leak sensor, or a certain style of icon for third-party CRAC units, forcing them to learn a new visual system can slow down response times. In AKCP’s latest Quicklime tutorial, they demonstrate how easy it is to upload and deploy your own custom map icons, tailoring the DCIM dashboard to perfectly match your team’s workflow.

Why Customize Your Icons?

A map is only as useful as it is readable. Custom icons allow you to seamlessly integrate Quicklime into your existing operational playbooks. You can use specific shapes for different vendors, color-code non-standard equipment, or simply use larger, higher-contrast icons to improve accessibility and visibility on large NOC wall displays.

How to Upload and Set Custom Icons

The process of swapping out default icons for your own graphics is quick and built right into the Quicklime Maps interface.

Prepare Your Images
Format matters

Before heading into Quicklime, ensure your custom icons are saved in a web-friendly format, typically as transparent PNG files. Keep them relatively small so they don’t clutter your floorplan.

Access the Map Editor
Log into your Quicklime web dashboard and navigate to the Maps workspace. Open the specific floorplan or map level where you want to place your custom sensor or device.

Upload to the Icon Library
When adding or editing a sensor’s properties on the map, look for the icon selection menu. Instead of choosing a default option, select the upload feature to add your custom PNG files directly to Quicklime’s internal library.

Assign and Save
Select your newly uploaded graphic, adjust its size on the map if necessary, and save your changes. Your custom icon will now accurately represent that device, complete with standard Quicklime alarm status indicators (like flashing red when a threshold is breached).

Customizing your icons is a simple step that significantly enhances the usability of your digital twin. Check out the full video linked above to watch the step-by-step process of importing and assigning custom graphics.
