From the World to the Rack: Multi-Level Mapping in AKCP Quicklime
When you are managing distributed infrastructure across multiple cities or countries, a simple spreadsheet of IP addresses isn’t going to cut it. You need to see exactly where an alarm is triggering, whether it’s a cooling failure in your London facility or a tripped breaker in Tokyo.
AKCP’s Quicklime DCIM allows you to build an intuitive, hierarchical map system. Instead of scrolling through endless text logs, you can literally click on a map of the world, zoom into a specific building, open the floorplan, and look at the exact rack that is reporting a problem. In this tutorial video, we demonstrate how to set up visual drill-down mapping in just a few clicks.
Why Build a Hierarchy?
A flat list of sensors is overwhelming during an emergency. By building a multi-level map, you create a natural, intuitive navigation path for your NOC (Network Operations Center) team. When a critical alert flashes red on the global map, operators can instantly follow the visual breadcrumbs down to the root cause without needing to memorize naming conventions or cross-reference spreadsheets.
Setting Up Your Map Drill-Down
While the video walks through the specific interface clicks, creating this hierarchy relies on a simple linking process within the Quicklime Maps workspace:
Navigate to the Maps section in Quicklime and upload a broad image for your top tier. For global organizations, this is usually a map of the world or a specific country. For campus environments, it might be an aerial view of your buildings.
With your top-level map in Edit mode, use the mapping tools to drop pins or markers onto the geographic locations of your data centers. Name these markers clearly (e.g., “Frankfurt Site A”).
This is where the magic happens. Right-click or access the properties of the marker you just placed. Look for the option to link it to a sub-map. Select the specific 2D floorplan image corresponding to that facility. Now, clicking the pin on the world map will instantly load the floorplan.
Once inside the linked floorplan, you can drag and drop your racks, CRAC units, and sensors onto the grid. Because of the hierarchy you just built, any alarms triggered by these specific racks will now roll up and alert the main top-level map.
