In today's environmentally aware times it is critical that every responsible company understands its day to day power consumption. It therefore becomes vital to understand your organizations current power consumption and gain a better understanding of where energy use is high or low and identify areas where consumption can be reduced.
Using cost effective Power Monitoring Sensors from AKCess Pro linked into your power supply will monitor power consumption, and connected to the securityProbe 5E, an intelligent monitoring device, will enable notification and alerts to be generated to give you control over building facilities like Lighting, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
For many building or facilities managers in the Telecoms and Data Center sectors it’s important to keep on top of power consumption and this is possible through smart or sub-metering where power is measured coming into specific rooms, floors or buildings.
Example Application
Site:
For a small data center building with say 2 floors and 8 offices occupied during normal office hours.
Problem One:
The facilities manager wants to monitor power consumption and cost on a monthly basis.
Problem Two:
He wants control over computer/server systems that consume power and needs to demonstrate costs savings as well as audit consumption data.
Situation:
The facilities manager is targeted by his management team with reducing the data centers power consumption and must provide analysis of power (cost) usage by equipment (systems) on a room by room basis over time, and so identify potential savings.
How AKCess Pro can help:
Using the securityProbe (an intelligent monitoring device) the power is monitored through Power Monitor Sensors (PMS) and Current Transformers (CT’s) connected to the power source (sub-metering) and the AKCess Pro securityProbe.
Use the AKCess Pro securityProbe 5E web interface to set parameters like cost per unit and the monitoring of loads to specific locations and equipment.
Set up unit costs to give an accurate cost report for specific locations, rooms or floors.
The AKCess Pro securityProbe 5E connects to various systems via the dry contacts to control HVAC, Lighting and security systems.
Set up motion detectors so if no motion is detected in a computer room for a given period of time the lights can be switched off where an employee has left the computer room but forgets to switch off the lights.
Not only are you able to control power usage but the AKCess Pro securityProbe 5E also has a great Access Control and video surveillance functionality allowing you to monitor and record unusual events and activities.
The AKCess Pro securityProbe 5E also has an alert and notification feature that lets you know if something has exceeded a give parameter.
AKCess Pro gives you the ability to remotely monitor power, potentially giving you a huge return on investment by providing savings in power usage consumption. Remote monitoring capabilities eliminate the need for manual power audits as well as providing immediate alerts to potential problems and a deep understanding of your power usage.

The AKCess Pro Power Monitor Sensor is designed to be used with AKCess Pro’s Linux based line of securityProbe units creating a fully IP enabled power monitoring solution. The AKCess Pro PMS can be fitted “in-line” or by using a more convenient “split core” and has a rugged design that communicates through an RS485 port, fully integrated into the securityProbe’s web interface in its own separate page. Take action when something happens with Sensor Notification Wizards
When an event occurs, the securityProbe 5E can send:
- SNMP traps
- Email
- SMS
- MMS
- Make a telephone call
- Make audio alert.
These alert messages are customizable and can include a picture of the event. Besides notification alerts, events information including pictures are stored in a non-volatile flash memory.
False Message Filter
In order to prevent false alarms, the securityProbe 5E allows extensive filtering of events. You can limit events based on the time of day or the day of the week. You can also limit the number of alerts per hour, so that you are not swamped with many messages. This is especially important with the sensor like the motion detector where you may want to process an event only when the business premises are closed.
Automatically Shutdown your Equipment in an Emergency
AKCess Pro's Linux devices will automatically send a shutdown message to your Linux or Windows based servers – so if there is a power outage, for example, you can rest assured that your servers will be safely and automatically shut down before your UPS runs out.
For added security and peace of mind the securityProbe 5E lets you add up to 4 cameras for video surveillance purposes so even if you cannot be there you can see what is happening.

Sensors and cameras are integrated allowing the easy review of pictures with such items as door openings, motion detection, loud noises and environmental factors. This allows for the pictures of interest to be easily reviewed using high level tools.
AKCess Pro Server
For complete control install the AKCess Pro Server application, a central control dashboard, that is intuitive to use and setup, getting you up and running in no time.
All AKCess Pro environmental monitoring units integrate with the AKCess Server application, which is IP-based, just install the AKCess Server application and use the easy to follow wizards to link to your network and add any IP camera, AKCess Pro unit or intelligent sensor. Use the AKCess Server application on a single PC to run a network of "Virtual Grids" using power meters on a sub-metered basis linked to specific locations, rooms or floors in buildings.
The "Virtual Grid" connects to AKCess Pro Power Monitor Sensors and Current Transformers to ensure that the key power consumption data is collected and that any reactions are appropriate. Set your notification and alert parameters to ensure that you are alerted if power consumption rises above pre-set levels and an alert can be used to trigger an action like sending "shut-down" instructions to your lighting and HVAC systems. When linked to motion detectors and cameras also gives you the ability to check if rooms are occupied or not prior to any shut down instruction.

AKCess Pro Server application device interface
A mapping function lets you see clearly the status of any monitoring device or camera for a specific location on a map or building layout. This lets you get an instant visual representation of your Virtual Power Grid and building facilities simply by dragging and dropping your power monitor sensors, Current Transformers and cameras onto the map.
